  • To raise practitioner’s awareness of the ‘Safeguarding children missing from home or care protocol’
  • To present the safeguarding issues for children and young people who go missing
  • To enable practitioners to put into practice how to respond to a missing child / young person and how to support them on their return
  • To explore what is meant by ‘Missing’ children and young people, what are the local protocols and procedures, what the safeguarding issues are for children who go missing and how to respond to children when they go missing and return home. Children who go missing are a particularly vulnerable group and are open to exploitation – this course closely links with the LSCB Child Sexual Exploitation Course for awareness and how to work with these issues.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Understand what the term ‘missing young person’ means
  • Have an awareness of why children and young people go missing
  • Know what the ‘risks’ and safeguarding issues are for those who go missing
  • Understand protocols, policies and procedures
  • how to make appropriate referrals
  • how to support young people on their return home
  • how to engage with children and young people during a ‘return interview’

Target Audience:

Both Cambridgeshire and Peterborough practitioners

This training day is open to:- Schools (primary and secondary), Colleges, Police PCSO’s / Beat Officers), Social Workers, Youth Offending Teams , Residential staff (council and private), voluntary agencies, localities, family workers , faith groups and health staff (health visitors / trauma clinics) and anyone who works with children, young people and their families.  This course is primarily for those professionals (statutory and voluntary) who either work predominately or who have regular contact with children and young people and their families; for those who hold particular responsibilities for safeguarding (children and vulnerable adults) and for those who hold positions as professional advisors. (i.e. Groups 2,3 and 4)
