Aim:
The training will be delivered by Change, Grow, Live, Peterborough and it will explore how addiction develops and how to recognise early warning signs of substance misuse in adults, young people, and families. The session will cover an overview of the drug and alcohol service for Peterborough. We will explore the short and long‑term consequences of drug and alcohol use, including impacts on physical and mental health, and provide a brief overview of relevant medical treatments. Participants will learn practical harm‑minimisation approaches and how to offer supportive, non‑judgemental guidance, alongside clear information on how to refer individuals to specialist substance‑use services. The session will also examine how substance misuse can overlap with abuse, neglect, exploitation, and wider safeguarding concerns, emphasising the importance of multi‑agency working, information sharing, and understanding local referral pathways.
By the end of the training, participants will:
- Recognise signs of substance misuse earlier and with more confidence
- Understand the health, social, and safeguarding impacts of drug/alcohol use
- Apply harm‑minimisation principles in their practice
- Know how and when to refer to specialist services
- Understand the overlap between substance misuse, abuse, neglect, and exploitation
- Work more effectively and collaboratively with partner agencies.
